For many years now, I’ve relegated any and all skirts to the work outfits section of my closet. I think that for so many years, after graduating college, I spent so many years chasing that dream career aesthetic, where I’m stepping out of a fancy luxury car, with an expensive leather work tote, sky-high Louboutins, and the slimmest pencil skirt snatching my waist from here back to Namibia!
I laugh now when I think of it because it is such an impractical outfit, especially for the work that I do, and the city I live in. I mean, first of all, between running from my office to the UN Headquarters at least twice in one day, I’m not too sure how I’d do that in sky-high heels and a super tight skirt that I can barely walk in, lol.
Of course, I am older and smarter and this past summer, I’ve just been so inspired by all the different takes on the classic mini-skirt and how it’s just become so easy to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe. At this point, I’m like “pencil skirt who?!”
I’ve especially been loving the textured take on mini-skirts, bring on the ruffles, the feathers, the tweed, and Chanel-inspired skirts, and even the move away from traditional form-fitting skirts to asymmetrical designs. It’s just been so refreshing and fun, and when I saw this ruffled and pleated mini from Pretty Little Thing, I absolutely couldn’t resist getting it. It’s just so fun and flirty and was really the perfect summer skirt.
I especially love that the pleats and the tiers are actually flattering to the body, and definitely help accentuate my curves, and hide the front part of my belly that still chooses to hold on to all my Covid lockdown weight!
I am excited to incorporate more mini’s into my closet and I’m even gonna try and swing a Chanel-esque one for the office this coming winter!
